Education
Tarloh Quiwonkpa
To Graduate
With Master’s Degree In Nursing
…She earns a GPA of 4.0

Not satisfied with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, she matriculated to Walden University and drank from the fountain of knowledge. On Saturday, July 24, 2010, Tarloh will receive a Master of Science degree in Nursing with a specialization in Nursing Informatics.

According to an invitation from Walden University, Tarloh’s graduation ceremony will take place at the Minneapolis Convention Center located at 1301 Second Avenue South in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It will begin promptly at 1:30 in the afternoon.  She will be among dozens of students who will receive degrees in various disciplines.

Tarloh, like many individuals, knows the importance of education – that it is the key to the future! She has made her relatives, friends and fans proud!

Tarloh received an Associate Degree in Nursing in 1990 from the College of St Catherine, St Mary‘s campus and became a staff nurse at Fair-view Riverside/ University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis from 1990 to 1992, providing care to patients in the Medical and Surgical care units.

In 1991, she was transferred to the Adult Critical Care float pool, accurately and competently assessing and applying critical thinking evidenced-based nursing practice in caring for acutely-critical-care patients; including patients on heart transplant waiting list.

During that period of professional experience and career growth, she began to explore another facility. In February 1992, she was hired as a full time staff nurse in the float pool at United Hospital, providing care to post-surgical and telemetry cardiac and congestion heart failure patients.

Acquiring strong clinical and technical skills, she was transferred to the Emergency Department (ED) in 1993, where she received, triaged, and provided medical care to patients with cardiovascular emergencies, experiencing cardiac and /or respiratory arrest, and /or affected by trauma and performed cardiac monitoring, assisted physicians during treatments and examinations, documented care and results, and administered medications.

As a full-time nurse and given the unique tuition re-imbursement program that United Hospital offers its employees Tarloh enrolled into the nursing program at Metropolitan States University in 2004 as a part-time student and completed her undergraduate degree in December 2007.

The diversity of her clinical experiences and her personal professional development has broadened her insight into the opportunities professional nursing has to offer. Even though she achieved professional success with an undergraduate degree, she however realized that as humanity embraces the 21st century, the integration of technology into profession nursing practice would be evidenced.
Accordingly, in an effort to be a part of this 21st century nursing paradigm shift, as it relates to nursing and the information technology (IT) it became equally imperative for her to acquire the skills and knowledge that will augment her current clinical nursing skills.

Her professional career journey as a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) student began in January 2008 at Walden University. With a GPA of 4.0, Tarloh successfully completed the Master of Science in Nursing, with specialization in Nursing Informatics.

In an interview with the Liberian Media, Tarloh says: “As a graduate of Kendeja High School (National Cultural Center High School), I want to thank Ms. Kenjena Wisemen and Mr. Nathan Pen (Peace Corps Volunteers), who went beyond the call of duty, waking us up on Monday morning in our dormitory at Kendeja, following a three-night performance at the E. J. Roy Building (Friday, Saturday and Sunday, two shows per day and arrived back at Kendeja at 3:00 in the morning) saying “You will need knowledge always. What if you get hurt from dancing and you have no education? Education is the key to your future.”
She continues: “As I reflect, they were so right. I have the conviction that my political comrade took advantage of my limited professional knowledge following the failed coup of 1980, to conduct their business as usual.”

Asked how she feels about her accomplishment, Tarloh points out: “The experiences have been enlightening, empowering and have broadened my knowledge on the role I can play to contribute and make a positive change in Liberia.”

She expressed thanks to her many friends and well wishers for their prayers and support during her sojourn at the university.

The management of the Liberian Media & Advertising Services congratulates Tarloh Munah Quiwonkpa RN, PHN, BSN and MSN on her graduation from Walden University and wishes her success in her endeavor.
